Using the MINDA app, you can record when an animal has calved. When recording a calving, you'll need to know:

  • Date the animal(s) calved

  • Animal ID

  • Sex of the calf

  • Fate

  • Birth ID of calf (if applicable)

  • NAIT Location (if applicable)

  • Production type (if applicable)

  • Assistance level

  • Calving notes/comments

How do I record a Calving Event?

Select Calving from the home screen and then select Record calving. Next go through the steps on screen.

Step 1. Select date

Select the date the animal calved.

Step 2. Choose your animal

Add the animal that calved.

Tip: If you have a wand connected to your MINDA app, you can scan the animals EID to add it.

Step 3. Select the sex of the calf

If you don't need to record any calf details, tap Don't record calf details or tap Skip sex and use temp tag to record a temp tag.

Step 4. Select the fate

There are 4 fates you can select including:

  • Reared

  • Bobbied

  • Died

  • Sold

If the calf will be reared, you'll need to enter in a few more details. All other fates will take you to the summary screen.

Note: If you've enabled the setting Record all calving assistance, you'll need to record an assistance for every fate.

Reared calf

When recording a reared calf, you'll need to enter in a few more details such as:

  • Birth ID

  • Production type (if applicable)

  • NAIT location (if applicable)

If you've opted in for LIC to be your NAIT information provider, you'll need to choose the NAIT location the animal was born at as well as the production type of the calf i.e. if the calf is a heifer that you're intending to keep as a replacement, choose Dairy as the production type.

Step 5. Review and finish

Review the details you've entered. There's a few extra things you can do on this screen including:

  • Delete the calving

  • Record twins

  • Record a new Calving Event

Similar to other Events, if you need to edit anything, tap on any of the columns or go back by tapping on the top left otherwise tap Finish.

Note: If you've opted in for LIC to be your NAIT information provider, you'll see a message letting you know that NAIT will be updated.

The Event should now show in the Holding Pen where you can approve it.

Temp tags

A temp tag can be used for newborn calves in the paddock (before you're ready to tag) or if you're still deciding to rear them. When recording a temp tag, you need to note down the temporary ID and the tag colour.

How do I record a temp tag?

Follow the steps above to record a calving. Once you reach step 3, click Skip sex and use temp tag. On the next screen, enter the temporary ID and the tag colour (if you've enabled the setting Use temporary tag colours).

How do I resolve a temp tag?

Head into the Calving tile and tap Resolve temp tags. You should see a list of all of your temp tags. Tap on the animal and follow steps 3 to 5 to record a calving.

Note: When using temp tags, it's important to note that an animal will not show as in milk i.e. she will not show in any Groups etc that look for animals that are lactating. For an animal to show as in milk, a Calving Event will need to be recorded.
