What is the Early Indicator - Repeat Matings table?
The Early Indicator - Repeat Matings table is designed to assess the effectiveness of your heat detection accuracy. It will use will use Eligible Cows (or the selected group) to focus on the number of short returns (cows cycling within the first 17 days of the mating period), as non-pregnant cows typically cycle every 18–24 days. By reviewing short returns early in the mating period, you can see whether changes are needed for how you detect heats on farm.
How do I read the Early Indicator - Repeat Matings table?
The Early Indicator - Repeat Matings table shows the total number of matings in the first 17 days (light blue) and the portion that were short returns (darker blue, second or subsequent mating). The table also provides a breakdown of the number of matings in the first 17 days, number of returned and percentage breakdown. If the percentage of short returns is above 13%, the indicator will change from blue to red and at that point, you should be reviewing your heat detection practices.
Returns higher than 13%
Returns lower than 13%
Early Indicator - Repeat Matings table breakdown
Total number of matings in the first 17 days of the mating period
Portion of matings that were short returns in the first 17 days of the mating period
Number and percentage of short returns. The % Returned is calculated using the number of repeat matings (from the first 17 days) divided by the total number of matings in the first 17 days. Using the example above, the % Returned is 4÷178=2.2%
Things to note
The table only updates during the first 17 days of the mating period (before normal returns happen). After day 17, the results will not change.
