Breed Codes
An animals breed is made up of 16 parts (i.e. F12J4). The below table shows the breed short codes that show in MINDA.
Breed Code | Breed Name |
A | Ayrshire |
B | Brown Swiss |
C | Charolais |

U | Unknown |
V | Devon - Red |
W | Sahiwal |

If the breed isn't included in the short text table, it will show as 'O' (Other) in a Group Profile report. To see the full breed breakdown and what the 'Other' breed is, click on the Cow Number in the report to bring up a summary of the animal information.
How Breeds look on Reports
Group Profile
In the group profile, the breed Attribute only shows the primary and secondary breed of the animal (the 2 breeds that make up the majority of the 16 parts). For example, if an animal was 9 parts Friesian, 4 parts Jersey and 3 parts Angus, then primary and secondary breed of that animal will be Friesian and Jersey.
Custom Report
Unlike group profile, a custom report will show the full breed of the animal. Using the same example as above, if an animal was 9 parts Friesian, 4 parts Jersey and 3 parts Angus, then it would show as F9J4Z3 on the report.
Note: The breed Attribute displays differently on the two reports because of how some reports pre-populate columns. This can cause formatting/space constraints.
How does the Breed (detail) Attribute in Groups work?
The Breed (detail) Attribute is a great way to find animals of a certain breed percentage. For example, adding the Breed (detail) Attribute as a filter allows you find animals that are recorded as 14 parts or more Friesian.
Sire Codes
You can generally apply the following criteria when looking at sire codes:
Lets use 115107, Lightburn Blade Gusto as the example.
115107: The first number of the code refers to the breed of the sire.
The number and corresponding breeds are as follows:
1: Holstein Friesian
3: Jersey
5: Crossbred ( KiwiCross), Ayrshire, or other dairy
7: Beef
8: Short Gestation Length Bulls ( SGL Hereford (###100+) & SGL Dairy(###400+))
115107: The next two numbers of the code refer to the year the bull enters the sire proving scheme.
15: 2015 SPS (born 2014)
16: 2016 SPS ( born 2015)
17: 2017 SPS ( born 2016)
115107: The next three numbers are just an ID number. Usually:
anything under 500 = LIC bull number
anything over 500 = Ambreed or other company’s bull number
So from our example bull code used above, we can assume that he is:
A Holstein-Friesian bull
2015 Sire Proving (born 2014)
Is an LIC bull
